The Gull Harbour Lighthouse, situated on Hecla Island within Manitoba's Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, is a significant historical landmark with roots tracing back to the late 19th century.
Historical Overview:
1898 Lighthouse: The original lighthouse, constructed in 1898, is a square, tapered wooden structure standing as a testament to the island's maritime heritage. This design was favored by the Department of Marine and Fisheries during that era due to its economical construction and resilience against harsh maritime conditions. The lighthouse's low center of gravity made it sturdy enough to withstand strong winds and waves.
1926 Lighthouse: To accommodate increasing maritime traffic and the need for a more prominent navigational aid, a taller steel lighthouse measuring 23.5 meters (77 feet) was erected in 1926 near the original structure. This lighthouse was built to guide vessels through the channel between Hecla Island and Black Island.
Architectural Significance:
The 1898 lighthouse is an excellent example of the square-tapered wooden tower design, characterized by its elegant tapering from a square base, wood-frame structure, exterior shingles, pedimented door and window, three-sided gallery supported by wooden brackets, and a square wooden lantern with a pyramidal roof. Its traditional color scheme consists of white for the tower, lantern, and gallery, with red accents on the lantern roof and door and window trims.
Cultural Importance:
Both lighthouses serve as symbolic reminders of Hecla Island's economic and social history, reinforcing the maritime character of the area. They are well-known landmarks cherished by long-time residents and visitors alike, contributing to the island's identity and serving as popular tourist attractions within the Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park.
Visitor Experience:
Visitors to the Gull Harbour Lighthouse can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Winnipeg, explore scenic trails such as the Gull Harbour Lighthouse Trail, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Hecla Island. The lighthouse's picturesque setting makes it a favored spot for photography and offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking to connect with Manitoba's maritime past.
The Gull Harbour Lighthouse stands as a beacon of Manitoba's nautical history, offering insight into the region's past and serving as a testament to enduring architectural design.
