Behind the Print: Framing a Bull Elk from Jasper National Park

🖼️ Bringing the Elk to the Frame – The Process

To showcase the final product professionally, I printed the photo on high-quality paper and then set out to build a custom frame by hand. The entire process took place right in my backyard using my DEWALT miter saw, corner clamps, and classic wood joinery tools.

🛠️ Here's a look behind the scenes:

📸 Photo 1: My outdoor workspace — a sturdy picnic table turned into a DIY frame shop.

📸 Photo 2: Using corner clamps to align and secure the mitred corners perfectly.

📸 Photo 3: A close-up of the finished corner — clean, sharp, and professional.

📸 Photo 4: More behind-the-scenes moments as the framing process continues — showcasing the care and craftsmanship that goes into every detail.

Once the frame was glued, clamped, and dry, I added a mat board to complement the image and draw the viewer’s eye directly to the bull elk. The end result is a professionally framed wildlife photograph that reflects both the moment in nature and the hands-on craftsmanship that went into it.

🌲 Why This Photo Matters

This image isn’t just a pretty picture — it tells a story.

Back when I used to be a long-haul truck driver, I would often travel through breathtaking landscapes across Canada. One day, while driving through Jasper National Park along Highway 16, I came across a herd of elk — and standing at the edge of the forest was this massive bull elk, antlers like a crown, perfectly framed by the wild.

I stopped at one of the many pullouts, grabbed my Canon 5D Mark IV and 100–400mm lens, and slowly approached. I managed to get close enough to capture this powerful, majestic moment in nature.

This photo represents the magic of slowing down, appreciating what’s around you, and turning that fleeting moment into something lasting — a piece of art you can hold, display, and remember.

My wife absolutely loves the finished piece — and I totally agree. It looks amazing hanging on our wall, and there’s something truly special about the way this bull elk commands attention in the room.
