A Rare Visitor in My Backyard: Northern Cardinal in Steinbach, Manitoba
Photographer: Rudi Dueck
On May 22, 2025, something extraordinary happened right in my own backyard in Steinbach, Manitoba—a sight so rare that I had to do a double take.
Perched among the branches, with its vibrant red feathers lit up in the soft morning light, was a Northern Cardinal—a bird almost never seen in this part of Canada. In fact, in my 25 years of living in Steinbach, I had never once seen a cardinal, let alone one in such perfect view. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and I had the incredible opportunity to not only witness it—but to photograph it.
Capturing the Moment
I quickly reached for my trusted camera: the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, paired with my go-to telephoto, the Canon EF 100–400mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM lens. The cardinal was cooperative, staying still just long enough for me to focus, frame, and fire off several shots. The result was a crisp, detailed portrait of this vibrant bird against the cool greens of spring—a truly breathtaking contrast.
There’s something deeply satisfying about capturing such a rare moment in nature, especially when it happens in your own backyard. As a wildlife and nature photographer, I often travel far and wide for the perfect shot, but this one came to me.
Why This Sighting Is So Unique
Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are typically found in the southeastern and central United States, and rarely venture into Manitoba. While a few isolated sightings have occurred in Winnipeg over the years, spotting one in Steinbach is incredibly rare.
This visit might hint at gradual shifts in migratory patterns or range expansions, possibly due to climate change or new environmental factors. While birding enthusiasts in southern Ontario might find cardinals common, here in Manitoba, they are nothing short of a mythical guest.
What This Means for Backyard Birders
This surprise encounter is a beautiful reminder that you don’t always have to trek through deep wilderness to witness amazing wildlife moments. Our own backyards can be windows into nature’s unexpected wonders—if we’re watching closely enough.
For anyone reading this who enjoys backyard birding:
Keep a camera handy. You never know what may show up.
Plant native shrubs and trees. These can provide food and shelter that attract a wider range of birds.
Be patient. Nature often rewards those who simply spend time observing.
Final Thoughts
This experience will remain one of my most cherished photographic memories. The cardinal’s striking appearance, combined with the rarity of the sighting, made for a powerful and personal wildlife encounter. It’s moments like these that fuel my passion for photography and my love of the outdoors.
Whether you’re a fellow nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or someone who simply enjoys the beauty of the wild—thank you for sharing in this story with me.
